Service Description

In this 6-session class, students will discover how different cultures—both ancient and contemporary—have used pottery as part of daily life, ritual, storytelling, and art. Each week, we’ll highlight a new region or historical period, explore how clay was used, and create a project inspired by that culture's unique style and techniques. Students will work with clay in various stages (wet, leather-hard, and bisque) and explore both decorative and functional forms as we move through handbuilding techniques that span centuries and continents. Projects may include: - Bell Beaker civilization and coil pots - Mayan storytelling and story tiles - Middle Eastern cultures and sgrafitto - Chinese blue and white pottery - Oaxacan black pottery and piercing clay - Native American cultures and raku firings Class Structure: Each class is 75 minutes long. We’ll begin with a short, engaging lesson (20–30 minutes) to introduce the culture and pottery style for the day, followed by a demo and plenty of hands-on time to build the project. Class Schedule: Classes meet every OTHER week on the following Wednesdays: February 4, 18 March 4, 25 - **NO CLASS ON MARCH 18** April 8, 22 May 6 is reserved as a make-up day only if MeliaPottery must cancel due to weather, power outages, etc. It is not a make-up day for student absences. Please Note: - This is a handbuilding class. Students will not be using the pottery wheel. If your student is looking to learn wheel throwing, check out our semester-long Ceramics class or we offer wheel-based classes for ages 12+ throughout the year. - This class is geared toward elementary ages and up. We’ll be learning through discussion, demos, and hands-on work. - For younger children (ages 4–7), we recommend our monthly Storytime Sculpture class instead—it’s designed just for them! - Sibling discounts available - contact us for details!
